SOUTH AFRICA’S DETERIORATING WATER SITUATION

Tuesday morning 11th July a typical news item read as follows: “Johannesburg residents have not only
braced themselves for the bitterly cold snap that resulted in snowfall over many parts of the city this
week, but are also preparing for a massive water outage planned to last until Friday.

Why? Because of a lack of infrastructure maintenance typical of the general South African malaise
which has caused the near destruction of the electricity supply, deterioration of the railway and road
networks.
