On-site Sodium Hypochlorite Generation (OSHG) Replaces Hazardous Cyanide in Precious Metal Extraction

Back in January 2000 a Romanian gold mine’s tailings dam burst causing 100 000 cubic meters of cyanide contaminated waste water to be discharged into tributaries of the Danube River. The concentration of cyanide at 100 times more than the allowable level for drinking water posed a threat to people, animals and the environment in parts of Serbia, Bulgaria and Romania.

This incident caused cyanide to be banned in various parts of USA, throughout Europe and in South America. This resulted in the consequent need for an alternative extraction method when mining gold, platinum group metals and other metals. And so Dr Jean-Marc Lalancette head of Dundee Sustainable Technologies (DST) announced that….”I believed that we could apply the safe processes used to extract metals such as platinum to the extraction of gold and other precious metals, and eliminate the very serious safety and environmental concerns associated with cyanide.”

And so was borne the DST innovative use of chlorination for the use of extraction. De Nora’s ClorTec OSHG is the perfect choice in the DST gold extraction process which eliminates the safety and environmental concerns with cyanide in the gold extraction process.

Filcon Filters, a leader in water filtration and reuse of waste water, is proud to represent De Nora in southern Africa. Read more about how ClorTec’s is an integral part in the DST gold extraction process….
