Globally 1 million plastic bottles are sold every minute and fewer than half will be recycled…the rest ends up in landfills or the ocean. According to environmental advocacy group Ocean Conservancy “the amount of unmanaged plastic waste entering the ocean has reached crisis levels and has caused significant economic and environmental damage.” We all know about the harm done to marine species which ingest plastic…but little has been said about the harm to humans who eat the contaminated fish. In the UK one third of fish caught are found to contain plastic …a 2014 study suggested that the average European who eats shellfish may consume 11 000 pieces of microplastic annually.
