Every 11.1 years the Sun reverses its magnetic field, causing a cycle of solar storms marked by solar flares…one of which you can see alongside. The sudden release of magnetic energy stored in the Sun’s atmosphere causes the flare. These solar eruptions are known as coronal mass ejections or CMEs. which when headed in our direction cause all sorts of problems with electrical grids, satelilites, communication systems etc.The current cycle is know as Cycle 24 and it is expected to reach its peak in 2012. Usually just before and just after the solar polar reversal there is a noticeable increase in CMEs. And the peak of the current cycle has bee forecast to be the most intense cycle in at least fifty years. The National Academy of Sciences (NAS)recenly reported as follows: “Historically large storms have a potential to cause power grid blackouts and transformer damage of unprecedented proportions, long term blackouts and lengthy restoration times, and chronic shortages for multiple years are possible.”There are some who are of the opinion that these solar storms are responsible for freak weather conditions as well as an increase in the number of earthquakes. All of which we are currently seeing. And NASA is indicating that this cycle could yet produce a Super Solar Storm…just think of what that may do to our electricity grid, weather and the number of earthquakes and volcanoes! We bring you this update because we at Filcon Filters care about our environment…we filter water, reuse and recycle waste water.
